The perfect divorce

Is a perfect divorce possible?

I can say with confidence that it is very achievable. Approximately half of my friends have divorced. No surprise there when you consider Australia’s high divorce rate. Of all my friends, I have observed one separating couple whose division of assets was executed with the utmost respect and equity. I would classify this divorce as a perfect one.

A Real-Life Example: Jane and James

Let’s consider Jane and James. In their second marriage, with no children together, they divided their assets with respect and equity.

The Division of Assets

The total asset pool was substantial—over $5 million, including properties, luxury cars, and artwork. Despite the disparity in their earnings, they agreed on a 50/50 split, resulting in an amicable and inexpensive divorce.

Avoiding Common Divorce Pitfalls

In contrast, I’ve seen divorces marred by pettiness, control, and revenge, especially when a third party is involved. These behaviours can escalate, leading to toxic situations that harm everyone involved.

Advice for Divorcing Couples

Pick your battles and don’t sweat the small stuff. Behave in a way that your children and friends will respect and be proud of your conduct. If there was a third party involved, do all you can to move past it, for your mental health.
